May 18th - May 29th, 2018

Immerse yourself in an artist's journey through Florence, Italy
 May 18th - May 29th, 2018
Immerse yourself in an artist's journey through Florence, Italy,
"The Cradle of the Renaissance"Before your journey begins, enjoy two introduction workshops, 3-hours each:
1. Crash Course on Watercolors
2. Crash Course on Silverpoint.

Workshops will be held at Winter Street Studios and will be available on Facebook LIVE. If you are unable to attend the workshop, you will be able to go back and watch the videos via our private Facebook group at your leisure.

Your 12-day itinerary will include a tour of major points of interest including: The Duomo, Campanile, Piazza della Signoria (where the Fountain of Neptune resides), and the Palazzo Vecchio.

We will visit numerous museums such as: Uffizi Galleries, Galleria Palatina in Palazzo Pitti, and the Accademia Gallery.  In addition, we will have a guided tour through the Florence Art Academy along with private tours of the studios of local artists and artisans.

You will be drawing from life (Renaissance fountains and gardens) and encouraged to take photographs for a final painting that can be created once you return home. I will offer suggestions and critiques to lead you through the process after our journey abroad.

During our stay in Italy, we will go on an overnight field trip to the sea by train, where you will practice plein air painting using a water or oil-based medium.

Also included in the price is a playlist of recommended podcasts giving supplemental information on the history of Florence, artists, and artworks we will be visiting along with practical studio information from contemporary leading artists.

Your immersive experience will also include a workbook (PDF) specifically designed for this trip. It will include assignments to practice during your stay, Bargue plates reference worksheets and challenges.

Participants will be responsible for their own travel expenses, museum tickets, lodging, and food. The website will provide recommendations for budget travel and favorite restaurants, bars and cafes.

Included in the itinerary will be days off where you can explore on your own. There will also be a final group dinner where we can discuss our experience together and look at our favorite artworks we created along the journey.

Finally, we will have an art show at my private studio in Houston, TX. The date is TBA because I will be encouraging everyone to create one completed oil or acrylic painting based on photos and sketches inspired by  your travels.

Spouses, family, and friends are welcome to join without the instruction fee.

Podcast
Each participant will be given links to relevant podcasts including audio lessons about artworks you'll see in Florence, artists and their process and historical stories relevant to your trip. You can start listening to them before you leave, on the plane, while you walk around the city or when you get back and continue working on your artwork.

Assignments:
Everyday you will receieve an assignment to complete. You may use a medium of your choice including: graphite, charcoal, watercolor, Silverpoint, acrylic or oils. *Note: Wet oils will be challenging to carry with you through the city. Some of your assignments will be done by yourself, others in the group and some will be created spontaneiously when we find a suitable location around gardens or fountains. We will also focus on one large assignment that can be worked on in sketches during our trip, but will be completed when you return home. This particular assignment will be completed in paint and will be based on photo and sketch composites you have gathered during your trip to Florence.

Critique & Exhibition:
Every participant will be asked to participate in critiques of student work toward the end of the day and the end of the trip. We will then discuss how to move forward with a final exhibition of all of our work at Winter Street Studios.

PDF Workbook:
To accompany your journey, you will be given a downloadable workbook where you will find paint mixing recipes, demonstrations, additional drawing challenges, artist quotes,

Before you go:: Live & Video "Quick-shops"
Before our adventure to Florence, I will lead two workshops from my studio. You can join me in person or you can watch on Facebook Live. I will be covering the basics of how to use watercolor and silverpoint so you can prepare your paper(s) ahead of time. I will also give you a suggested material list that can be purchased at a discount through either Natural Pigments or the Houston Jerry's Artarama. You will also receive tips on how to travel with your art supplies and suggestions for traveling comfortably on a long flight. I'll also cover some basics such as how to get an EU phone card, transferring money and ideas for lodging. We'll also download "WhatsApp", an app to make it easier/cheaper to text each other while in Italy.
